Apple Crumble

Serves 40 (Uploaded : 17/10/10. First cooked : 27/01/11. Rating 4/5)

3K large cooking apples (or 3K frozen red berries)
1.5K flour
900g unsalted butter
500g white caster sugar

1. Heat over to 150C/gas 4.

2. Peel and core apples and chop into small pieces. (This is very time consuming. Alternatives : only half peel the apples and cut the apple pieces smaller, or replace apples with frozen summer fruits - £2/K at Sainsburys for the "basics" options) Keep sprinkling with sugar to prevent the apples going brown. (Andrew F option : use vanilla sugar instead of ordinary sugar for a great extra taste). Lay on the base of a tin. Peeling can be time consuming, so you may want to try to find pre-peeled/pre-cut apples. Or replace some of the apples for berries or other fruit.

3. Microwave the butter for 30 seconds to soften it.

4. In a bowl, mix the flour, butter and 400g sugar together with your hands. You are looking to mix them together, kneading out the lumps until well mixed and leaving no lumps bigger than a small walnut.

5. Sprinkle flour mixture on top of apples.

6. Bake for 45 minutes, until the crumble topping has turned golden.
